Citrus: Sweet & Savory Sun-Kissed Recipes (A Cookbook Review)

I may not blog on a weekly basis anymore, but one thing you can be sure of is there will always be new cookbook reviews on Echanning. I received my current one on my doorstep a couple of days ago and I soon as I opened the box, I devoured each and every recipe on each and every page. As you can probably already tell by the title, these recipes are all citrus themed and while I don’t think citrus is in season right now (I could be wrong), I still think there are plenty of delicious recipes that you could try out this fall and winter.

Citrus- Sweet& Savory Sun-Kissed Recipes

I don’t think I’ve ever met a citrus-y food that I didn’t like. Citrus desserts happen to be my favorite type of desserts. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE lemon merengue and key lime pie. Those are my Achilles’ heels. So, you know when I opened to page 51 of this book and saw a recipe for key lime pie, I was jumping for joy!

What I especially love about this book, is that the ingredient list is small and the ingredients aren’t that hard to find and you could actually pick up most of the ingredients at any of your local grocery stores.

I could try and describe all the recipes in detail to you, but I’m sure you would much rather see some of the recipes for yourself, right?

Fall Is Officially Here!!

Well, okay, maybe it’s already been here for a while now, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s not officially fall until I break out the cozy socks, sweaters and pumpkins. I live in the south and it pretty much stays hot here all the way up until late November or December. Every now and then, like this past weekend, we have a cold front move in and it makes everything really start to feel like fall.

When I woke up Saturday morning and felt that nip in the air, I started freaking out, not in a bad way, but in a I’m about to burst because I’m so excited kind of way. I immediately lit all my pumpkin spice candles, put on some comfy leggings and socks, and turned on some hocus pocus. I just realized that October is almost halfway over and I haven’t watched hocus pocus once. That is so uncharacteristic of me! Last year, I was the first one to watch it on October 1st.

I know, I know….. I’m such a dork when it comes to holidays, but come on….they only come around once a year so just lets just enjoy it while we can! In all honesty, this post isn’t about really anything in particular, I was just so excited about the season and decided to blog about it. lol. Here are some mix matched pics I took of fall “things”. This is my living room. I know I said a while back that I was going to do a new home tour, but I’m still not through with “renovations” and decorating so I’m only going to show you my halloween decor. As you can probably tell by the picture, I have two framed quotes because they really spoke to me and it was just a little something that’s nice to look at every so often. The bigger frame says “Home is where the heart is,” and I really love that saying because it’s so true to who I am and what I feel.

The second frame says ” go confidently in the direction of your dreams,” and I love this because it’s a great reminder to never give up on my dreams and always strive to reach my goals in life. Both candles I have burning are pumpkin spice scented candles and I can’t for the life of me remember the brand of candle they are. Sorry. The candlestick actually belongs on my coffee table, but I moved it because I was afraid it would get knocked over by one of my rambunctious pets. I think the glitter pumpkin speaks for itself, haha.

When I said I immediately put on my comfy socks and blanket before, I wasn’t kidding as you can tell by the picture above. The “blanket” is actually a scarf but it’s so big and heavy that I could use it as a blanket. If you want to pick one up, I got it from mod cloth and if I’m not mistaken there are still some in stock.

The tree, I got from Bed, Bath and Beyond and I really love it because it looks really nice at night when you light some candles and turn off all the lights.

Eventually I decided to get off my butt and go for a drive to take in the fall sights and went on a little drive through our “mountains”. I tried to find as many colorful trees and leaves as I could, but they were really sparse that day.

I stopped on a mountain overlook of our small town and tried to get some autumn shots, but as I said before, the colors were sparse this day, but pretty nonetheless.

Lastly, I took a photo of the sun starting to set on a beautiful reddish tree. I just love the crisp, cool feel of fall weather and I’m so excited for the upcoming holidays!

You First, Lea Michele's Second Book

Most of us has, at some point, written in a journal or diary. It’s really therapeutic and and an easy way to release bottled up thoughts without having to share those thoughts with other people. To this day, I have a journal that I like to write in on occasion that helps me to gather all my thoughts and feelings and have a chance to process them.

If you know who Lea Michele is, which lets be honest, if you’ve seen Glee or Scream Queens then you definitely know who she is, and you might know that a couple of years ago, she published her first book Brunette Ambition where she shared her experiences and tips on beauty, fashion, inner strength and also a few tid bits about herself.

As, you can probably tell by the titled, this post is about her second book title You First, which is basically a journal combined with outlined exercises and prompts to help you live your best life.

To start off with I want to say that I love the idea of putting ourselves first. Not because of narcissism or anything like that, but because a lot of us are so busy taking care of other people that we hardly ever take the time out that we need for ourselves. I think one way to start doing that is introspect.

If we sit down and actually think about what we need in order to focus on bettering ourselves, we can then begin on that path towards improving. That’s the great thing about this book. Each exercise and question helps you to think about things that you may not even know are missing and how to go about changing them.

The first section; Roots, gets you thinking about where you came from and helps you explore what your family was about. To be honest, I don’t think about this topic as much as I should. Not only does it have a family tree exercise, but it also asks you questions that make you realize how much your family has shaped you into the person you’ve become.

One thing from my family that I’ve always managed to collect is family recipes. My favorite one being this Red Velvet Cake Recipe my grandmother gave me.

This topic is very relevant to me right now, because I’ve recently joined a fitness boot camp. Fitness is more than just being fit. It’s about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making yourself stronger. This chapter is all about establishing what your fitness goals are and the steps you need in order to achieve them.

Keeping with the healthy lifestyle theme, there’s also a chapter on diet and nutrition. As you can see by the images above each page has very useful and practical tips and exercises to get our diet/nutrition on the right level. Also keeping with the journal theme, each page as enough space for you to write in your answers.

Ambition. This is something I definitely have a lot of. I want so many things and sometimes I just don’t know where to start. The first part of this chapter asks you what your goals are, because let’s face it, you can’t get to point B without A. In this chapter we take a look at our role models in life and do some mind expanding challenges to help us with our goals.

So, at this point we’ve discovered that the beginning of the book focuses on introspection with learning our family backgrounds and setting goals to push us forward. The second half of the book, which I’m sure most of us will really “get into” is, relationships and happiness. We are all constantly trying to build better relationships whether they be with a significant other or friends and family. As far as happiness goes, who doesn’t want that?

In each one of these chapters you learn new ideas and techniques for bettering yourself while also getting that therapeutic feeling we get when journaling. Even better, if you’ve never done a journal before or are just getting back into the swing of it, this book will easily guide you through the process so that it feels as if you’ve been journaling your whole life.

I really enjoyed doing the exercises in this book, and I was quite surprised with the things I learned about myself and those around me.

The Homemade Kitchen (A Cookbook Review)

Hey Guys!  It’s been Awhile!

Especially where cookbooks are concerned. I think you know where I’m heading with this…… Yes, that’s right, it’s time for another cookbook review!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that I’m kind of, maybe, obsessed with cookbooks. I love cooking and even more, I love eating! My newest cookbook is by Alana Chernila and it’s called The Homemade Kitchen. In this book, Alana teaches you how to cook an egg six different ways, how to cook vegetables, how to turn fruit into jam and so on and so forth.

So many of these recipes are favorites of mine that it would be really hard for me to choose just one. However, looking at some of these recipes makes me think I might need to be a more advanced cook in the kitchen to make them.

I was so impressed by Alana’s diverse and detailed recipes and I can’t wait to try all of them out myself! Not to mention the pictures are gorgeous!
